Upcoming Art Classes

art, bookmaking, classes, Prints

Hey everyone! I’m teaching a whole bunch of classes in the next couple months, so here’s some pertinent information for you. Mark those calendars and come sign up!

Most of the classes I’ll be teaching are through The Merry Inksters of Corvallis. See more information for these classes and others on their official summer schedule!

Drypoint Printmaking
Instructor: Christy Turner
Tuesday & Thursday, June 11 & 13  6-9 p.m. (2 sessions)
Or second class: July 30 & August 1, 6-9 p.m. (2 sessions)
Tuition $60; Materials $15

Drypoint printing is acid and solvent free, making it one of the safest forms of intaglio (etching). Designs are made by scratching into the surface of a flat metal or acrylic plate.  The plate is then inked and printed.  In this class, attendees will learn how to design, etch, and print a black and white intaglio print using an etching press. This is a beginning course–no prior artistic experience required, and is fun for all ages.

Introduction to Relief Printing
Instructor: Christy Turner
Monday/Wednesday, July 8 & 10, 6-8:30 p.m. (2 sessions)
Tuition $45; Materials $10

This two-night class is an introduction to linoleum block-printing. In this course you’ll learn how to design, carve, register and print a one color linoleum block print, both by hand and using a cylindrical press. This is a beginning course–no prior artistic experience required.

Another section of this class will be offered Tuesday/Thursday August 20 & 22, 6-8:30 p.m. (2 sessions)

Artist Books
Instructor: Christy Turner
Tuesday/Thursday, July 16 & 18, 6-9 p.m. (2 sessions)
Tuition $75; Materials $15

Artist books are a fascinating art form that can include a wide array of different media and ideas. In this class you’ll learn more about what exactly defines an artist book, as well as how to conceptualize and create your own using a few simple binding techniques. Attendees should plan on bringing pictures, small artworks, paper samples, or other bits and pieces to incorporate into their finished books–expect to leave with 2 to 3 finished artist books, depending on time.

I should note that I’m really excited about this one–artist books are pretty much the coolest art form out there. This class goes a little above and beyond, because I’ll be teaching a lot of the theory behind artist books as a medium as well as the technical process of making a book. So sign up, because it’s going to be awesome.

Basic Sewn Bookbinding
Instructor: Christy Turner
Wednesday, August 7, 6-9 p.m. (1 session)
Tuition $50; Materials $15

Using several variations on traditional coptic binding techniques, you’ll learn to sew and bind a variety of exposed spine books. Because the stitched binding is left visible rather than being covered by a traditional hard spine, this kind of decorative bookbinding is commonly utilized in the creation of artist books. Learn how to create your own notepads, journals, and sketchbooks using a variety of simple sewn binding techniques! This three hour workshop is a beginning course–no prior artistic experience required, and is fun for all ages.

I know, they look pretty awesome, right? BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE.

This Thursday evening, June 6, I’ll be teaching a hand press linoblock printing class at the Drawing Board–6-8:30pm, $35 supplies included.

And June 27, I’ll be teaching a beginning drawing class, also at the Drawing Board.  6-8:30pm, $35 supplies included, but bring your own sketchbook.

Please note that ALL of these classes require preregistration at least three days in advance. Contact me for more information!
